Al Nelson founded North Park Rug and Carpet Co. in 1950 during the post-war heydays of San Diego. Gene Stevenson drove from Minnesota to work for Al in 1959. He enjoyed the work—and North Park—so much that he bought the business from Al in 1975. He worked there alongside his wife Jan as it continued to flourish as a family owned and operated rug and carpet business until his retirement in 1995. Gene and Jan’s son Mike began working in the store when he turned 17. It wasn’t long before he met Kim--the girl he would later marry. Together, they continued the tradition of the family-oriented and relaxed atmosphere that distinguished North Park Rug & Carpet, Co.; even more so after Mike bought the business from his dad in 1995.
In 2014 Mike’s nephew, Jesse Nuñez, began working with his uncle learning the business while continuing to build strong relations in the community and with our loyal customers.
In October 2016 Jesse and his wife Erica, took over the business--the third generation of family to do so. They are excited and committed to continue providing the same quality flooring and service to North Park, greater San Diego, and the surrounding Southern California area. Still in its original storefront location since 1950, our business has been a lasting hallmark in the historic North Park neighborhood in San Diego. We continue to serve our vibrant community with generations of satisfied customers.
The Stevenson and Nuñez families have deeply appreciated the loyalty of our customers who have supported us for over 60 years, and our commitment will always be to keep our products and service at the highest quality for you, our valued customers.
